Helen's Trust

St Marys Catholic High School Charity of the Year 2010-2011

Hear from the Head girl a bit about how they have been raising funds for Helen's Trust

"In September, we voted for Helen’s Trust as our school charity for 2010/11 with the ambition of trying to raise £10,000. As it is such a new charity and working for such an important cause, our whole school has thrown itself into fundraising throughout the year. The many varied events to raise funds have included a Talent Show, Bag Packs and a Half Marathon.

We were just recently given the opportunity for 50 pupils from our sixth form to take part in an abseil at Millers Dale in the Peak District. As soon as we found out about this event, we thought not only would it be an exciting afternoon spent with all of our friends, but it would be an absolutely excellent way to raise some money for our Sixth Form Charity, Helen’s Trust.
Our aim was to abseil 10,000 feet to represent each pound we hoped to raise by the end of our academic year. We are delighted to say that we achieved our target, persuading Lucy Nickson, the new Chief Executive of Helen’s Trust, to be abseiling as we passed the 10000 foot mark.

To raise the profile of Helen’s Trust throughout the event, we created a giant ‘Helen’s Trust Sock’ which we could attach to every person who abseiled from the Millers Dale bridge. Some people wore the sock over one or both feet, some attached it to their harnesses and one boy abseiled with it over his head! We all had an amazing time, and made lots of money for a charity that we all hold really close to our hearts."
